ABOUT HOTEL EXPLORA IN ATACAMA:

The Atacama oases, in the middle of the driest desert in the world, have an altitudinal peculiarity: they are situated at 2,500 meters above sea level, making the Atacama not only the driest, but also the highest desert on earth. For this reason, the year-round climate is pleasant and the transparency of light, unique. The outlandish geography of volcanoes, salt flats and high altitude wetlands, has an unparalleled appeal.

Explorations in Atacama will allow you to become acquainted with the multiple aspects of this region: its geography, history, fauna, and geological features, volcanoes and ancient villages. Explorations have been designed to allow for gradual acclimatization to the altitude. Some excursions take place in the vicinity of San Pedro, between 2,500 and 3,000 meters
(8,200 and 9,850 feet) above sea level; others are at intermediate levels between 3,000 and 4,500 meters (9,840 and 13,120 feet); and the most demanding reach heights of up to 6,000 meters. (19,680 feet)

Each day explora guests can join a variety of explorations; walking, horseback riding or biking. You can choose from 8 to 10 different options which have been specifically selected according to the weather, guests' desires, the duration and its difficulties.

All explorations are accompanied by explora guides and are available at all levels of abilities to explore the nature or the history of Atacama. Be in the Andes experiencing the power of heights of more than 4,000 meters (13,120 feet), enjoy the volcanoes and plateaus or visit the small villages with their traditions and folklore.

Day 03 - Santiago:

Full day excursion to Vina del Mar -Chile’s main sea side resort and stop at the port of Valparaiso. Travel out of Santiago past the vineyards, farms, orchards and olive plantations of Curacavi and Casablanca valleys. At the coast, drive along the beaches of Las Salinas and Reńaca to Vińa del Mar, a town Chileans refer to as “Ciudad Jardín” due to its parks, flower beds and gardens. The beach is the resort’s main draw, however, and visitors and locals alike make use of Costanera Avenue and the oceanfront promenade in the shadows of the imposing Casino Municipal. Follow Espańa Avenue to neighboring Valparaíso, a port christend by the Spanish in 1536. Climb up, down and around these narrow twisty streets—the city is balanced on some 40 hills—and pause at the water front to watch the ships, boats and fishermen in the bay. The tour proceeds to the heart of the city, the Plaza Sotomayor, a pleasant sanctuary, opposite the Maritime Authority. Inside the plaza is the Monument a los Héroes de Iquique, a memorial for those killed during the War of the Pacific. Just beyond this is Muelle Prat, the pier complete with small crafts market. Lunch (not included) can be had at one of the many restaurants that border the beach; the perfect opportunity to sample the port’s famously fresh fish and seafood. For the afternoon, visit La Sebastiana, another of poet Pablo Neruda’s homes-turned-museums, ride one of the city’s many elevators, an effective mode of moving about this largely verticle port back at the turn of the century. Ascendor Artillería, built in 1898, is one of the oldest still in operation and offers a beautiful view of the ocean. Finally, enjoy a drive through the financial and commercial districts before setting out for Santiago through the Curacavi Valley where traditional Chilean sweets and snacks are for sale. (B)
